A Journey Into The Rustic Old Town of Rethymnon, Greece

The Old Town of Rethymnon in Crete, Greece

After soaking in the lively streets and archaeological wonders of Heraklion, we packed our bags and headed west toward another gem on the island of Crete—Rethymnon. With the salty breeze at our backs and the Mediterranean sun glowing overhead, we couldn’t wait to lose ourselves in yet another picturesque old town, steeped in history, charm, and irresistible Cretan hospitality.

Where is Rethymnon?
Nestled between the more famous cities of Chania and Heraklion, Rethymnon sits along the northern coast of Crete. It’s a scenic drive, just under 90 minutes from Heraklion that rewards you with both mountainous vistas and coastal beauty. Though smaller than its neighbouring cities, Rethymnon offers a perfect blend of Venetian elegance, Ottoman mystery, and Greek island charm.

About the Old Town
Rethymnon’s old town is a beautifully preserved tapestry of time. Here, cobbled alleyways lead you past pastel-colored Venetian houses, hidden fountains, and blooming bougainvillea. Ottoman-era minarets rise unexpectedly between Catholic churches, and every corner seems to whisper tales from centuries past. You’ll immediately notice how the old town gracefully blends cultures—Venetian architecture with Turkish touches, Greek life unfolding within ancient walls. It’s easy to spend hours simply wandering, photographing the textures and colors, or people-watching from shaded café tables.

7 Things That You Shouldn’t Miss When Exploring Rethymnon:

1. Venetian Harbour
At the heart of Rethymnon lies the Venetian Harbour, a picture-perfect reminder of the city’s maritime heritage. Fishing boats sway gently in the water, tavernas spill onto the promenade, and the aroma of grilled seafood mingles with the salty sea air. It’s the perfect spot to begin your journey—order a coffee, watch the sun sparkle on the waves, and let the city unfold around you. Location: Click Here for Map

2. Rethmyno Lighthouse
Guarding the old harbour’s entrance, the Rethymno Lighthouse is a striking landmark with a fascinating past. Though it resembles Venetian architecture, it was actually built in the 1830s under Egyptian rule. Today, it no longer lights the way for ships, but it remains one of the most photographed icons of Rethymnon. Walk along the breakwater, camera in hand, and take in the sweeping views of both sea and town. Location: Click Here for Map

3. Fortezza Castle
No trip to Rethymnon is complete without climbing up to the Fortezza Castle, the massive Venetian stronghold that looms above the city. Built in the late 16th century to fend off pirate raids, its bastions, gates, and ramparts tell stories of battles and resilience. Wander through its courtyards, explore the remains of storerooms and chapels, and don’t miss the panoramic views—from the Cretan Sea on one side to the labyrinth of the Old Town on the other. Step through its stone arch and you’ll feel as though you’ve crossed a threshold into another era. Today, it leads you straight into the vibrant heart of the Old Town, where centuries-old charm thrives among lively shops and cafés. Location: Click Here for Map

On the bustling square of Tessaron Martiron stands the Church of the Four Martyrs, Rethymnon’s largest church and one of its most significant landmarks. Dedicated to four locals who were executed in 1824 for refusing to renounce their Christian faith, it is both a spiritual and cultural touchstone. Inside, you’ll find impressive frescoes and icons, while outside, the church’s neoclassical façade anchors the square with solemn beauty. Location: Click Here for Map
