Comino Island: The Paradise In The Blue Mediterranean Sea, Malta

Set in the idyllic Mediterranean Sea, surrounded by azure colored water, the island of Comino away from everything is another paradise that we have found after we discovered the Balos Lagoon a couple of years back.

Comino is the smallest inhabited island in the Maltese Archipelago with an area of only 3.5 square kilometers and a population of only four residents. In Comino, there's no traffic, no hustle, no bustle; only unspoilt nature, the sound of the wind and the smell of the sea. The island's tranquillity and isolation, making it an ideal place to escape everyday life.

Today, Comino island is a bird sanctuary and nature preserve, also a little piece of heaven for the day-trippers who love swimming, snorkeling, walking and diving.

Make the best of your day trip with our top picks of things to do in the beautiful island of Comino.

1. Swim @ Blue Lagoon
Comino island is renowned for its Blue Lagoon, a stunning seawater swimming pool with crystal clear blue water and beautiful white shore, which is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful spots in Malta. Location: Click here for Map

2. Snorkeling @ Crystal Lagoon
Besides Blue Lagoon, the less well known Crystal Lagoon with brilliant emerald green water is equally beautiful. Crystal Lagoon is the best place to do snorkeling as it is blessed with rich marine life and crystal clear water. Location: Click here for Map

Before you dive into the irresistible crystal clear blue water, I strongly recommend you to hike around the island and discover the beauties of this little gem. The scenic routes offer some breathtaking views of the sea with unique limestone cliffs. Take it leisurely, walking from one end to another is less than an hour.

Getting There
Comino Island is situated in between Malta and Gozo and can easily be reached by ferry from both ferry terminal in Malta (Cirkewwa) and Gozo (Mgarr); and the journey takes around 30 minutes. The cost for a 2-Way ticket is 10EUR and you can purchase the ticket at the harbour from Comino Ferries Co-Op Ltd. It would be the best if you can take the first ferry at 9:00am, you will find Comino still almost deserted at that hour and you just have to enjoy the serenity moment while it lasts.

No trip to Malta is complete without visiting the island of Comino. It doesn't matter whether it's summer or winter, do spend at least half a day or even better if you have one full day to immerse yourself in this little piece of paradise on earth.
